A LGBT slogan goes to the Science Scrapheap

The ubiquitous LGBT mantra “Born that way” is finally getting dumped in the landfill of scientific fiction.  Bible teachers have been trying to do that for years, and the sexual revolution is now doing it for us.   What has caused the reversal?

Think of it like this.  Bikes are wonderful vehicles.  But do you know what bicycles are terrible at?  They make for terrible tow-trucks.  That may seem obvious, but I am sure you have seen kids on bikes pulling other kids on skates or other wheeled items.  It works for a while, but it just doesn’t last long or prove very effective.  Bikes don’t have the power or the design to tow much of anything.  If you really want to pull things along, you need the right vehicle.

Science is quite similar in this regard.  Science is wonderful.  It serves humanity in incalculable ways, but that doesn’t mean it has no limitations.  Science is meant to be pulled along by reality and not the other way around.  Science doesn’t make reality, it observes reality.  It tells us what is there and what we can do with it.  Which means, if you try to make science say what you want it to say, you are trying to make science into a tow-truck to pull your ideology.   This doesn’t work and won’t last long.

Before I get to the LGBT issue, let me demonstrate the point with abortion.  For years we were told that inside a pregnant mother was nothing more than a blob of tissue.  The earliest embryonic cells were just like any other tissue that could be disposed if desired.  No one says that anymore.  Science couldn’t tow that ideology once the microscopes got strong enough.

This kind of thing is going to keep happening.  We know science is always changing and adapting.  As microscopes and telescopes and methods get better and better, new discoveries will be made and old ideas will be thrown out.  That is fine when it comes to chemicals and mechanics and livers and quasars and such.  But when it touches on things that God has spoken about, we are in a different realm.

Remember, science is showing us what is really there and what can be done with it.  God has given us that task when he told Adam and Eve to hold dominion of this world.  Science is a tremendous tool for doing that.  But when God has already told us things about this world, science cannot undo what is established by God.  When God told us that he knits us together in the womb, then at no point can science tell us that it is just tissue that can be disposed of.  When God told us that he made us male and female, and the design was for lifelong marriage, science cannot undo what God has established in the created physical world.  Any attempt is making science a tow truck to pull a rebellious ideology.

As mentioned above, this has happened with the slogan “born that way.”  In a USA Today article found here, Alia E. Dastagir reports how scientists are acknowledging that they don’t know the precise causes for homosexuality and other gender issues.  In her report Dastagir said, “medical scientist and Barnard professor Rebecca Jordan-Young broke down 13 years of exhaustive analysis on hundreds of studies on sex, gender and the brain. Her conclusion? Biology matters. But we really don't understand how.”  Professor Sari Van Anders added, “The science of whether sexual orientation is biological is pretty sparse and full of disparate, mixed and unreplicated findings.”

The Bible has already answered the main questions about this issue.  People are broken and that brokenness extends to our biology, our thinking, our sexuality, our culture and every other corner of creation.  That brokenness means our bodies, our emotions, our desires, our affections, and our reasoning are not going to work correctly.  Even if something was found in the genes, it would just be another evidence of this brokenness.  While science can bring some precision to the interplay between culture and biology, if it leaves out the spiritual dynamic of fallen rebellion against God, it will never address the real issue.

So science is dumping the “born that way” slogan and the LGBT community is glad to see it go.  The growing idea now is that gender is fluid and you can move up and down a spectrum of options.  No doubt there will be some scientific findings to back this up in due time.  What do we do?  We keep holding forth the word of life, stating what God has said about men, women, sexuality, marriage, and family.  The truth will make people free, and we don’t want to trade that freedom for the latest style of rainbow colored chains.  Science will come around to acknowledge the reality of God’s world.  Give it time and people will grow weary of towing along an ideology with such an uncooperative vehicle as science.
